In the quiet moments between December 31st and January 1st, as the world collectively counts down to a new year, I find myself reflecting on the transformative power of beginnings. It’s a time when the promise of a fresh start dances in the air, and the possibilities seem endless.

There’s something magical about the transition from December 31st to January 1st; the promise of renewal, a chance to rewrite our stories, and embrace a New Year with the unknown. I find myself excited for this New Year ahead with possibilities that a new beginning holds.
Personal Reflection:
On 31st December 2016, I stepped into the New Year of 2017 as a married woman. A celebration of love filled with dreams of a fresh start. I felt the sparkle with anticipation and held onto the belief that 2017 would be a year of adventures as Mr & Mrs.
Expectations vs. Reality:
However, life had very different plans and the expectations I had were met with challenges, one after the other. What was supposed to be a seamless journey into a new chapter became a winding path, marked by unexpected twists and turns.
In embracing the vulnerability of these moments, I discovered a resilience that surpassed my wildest expectations. The discrepancy between what I envisioned and the reality I faced became the canvas on which my story of self-love, growth, and newfound strength was painted.

The path to self-love has been far from a leisurely stroll. It’s been a substantial challenge, particularly in the past year—a trek of self-reflection and acceptance. This demanding journey urges us to be honest with ourselves, peel back the layers, and courageously embrace vulnerability.
Pivotal Moments:
Amidst the chaos, a pivotal moment crystallised. Health deteriorated, family losses loomed, houses shifted, and the drama with narcissists played its part. In the midst of this tempest, I found myself pondering, “Is this it?” It was in this vulnerable moment that the seeds of self-compassion took root. This marked the genesis of a transformative chapter—a realisation that the work I had done was not in vain, and its purpose was about to materialise.
As I pedalled through the challenges on my trusty Peloton, the rhythmic whir of its pedals became more than a physical exercise. It echoed the determination that fuelled my personal transformation, reinforcing the importance of self-love in every pedal stroke. The Peloton journey, with its ups and downs, mirrored the undulating path of self-discovery, teaching me resilience with every ride.

Another crucial boundary was learning when and how to say ‘yes’ to things I genuinely wanted to do. As a people pleaser, I always said ‘yes,’ even if it meant suffering. In the intricate dance of parenting after separation, I discovered a nuanced approach that resonated deeply—parallel parenting. This intentional choice over conventional co-parenting emerged as a beacon, guiding us through the complexities with a focus on individual well-being and a nurturing environment for our child.
Choosing Parallel Parenting:
The decision to embrace parallel parenting wasn’t made lightly. It stemmed from a recognition of our unique circumstances and the acknowledgment that a one-size-fits-all co-parenting model might not be the most harmonious path for us. Parallel parenting offered a tailored alternative—a roadmap that allowed us to coexist without the entanglements that often accompany traditional co-parenting.

However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that even parallel parenting has its challenges, particularly when dealing with someone toxic, like a narcissist. This dynamic introduces complexities where every interaction becomes a delicate dance. It’s damn hard, but the driving force behind enduring this challenge is the unwavering commitment to our child.
The Anchor of Stability:
Amidst the difficulties, the stability for our child comes from me as her mother. It’s about not allowing manipulation and control to seep into our parenting dynamic. Our daughter receives consistency and nurturing from me, as her well-being takes precedence. This is a challenging journey because he lacks the ability for consistency and doesn’t consistently prioritise our child’s needs, due to his own needs as a narcissist.
Focus on Individual Well-Being:
Parallel parenting isn’t just about navigating the shared responsibilities of raising a child; it’s about prioritising individual well-being. This approach encourages both parents to invest in self-care and personal growth, creating a ripple effect that positively influences the overall co-parenting environment.
Contributing to a Healthy Environment:
For our child, this intentional separation translated into a stable and nurturing environment. Reduced tension between parents meant fewer emotional crossfires, allowing our child to thrive in an atmosphere where love and support weren’t overshadowed by unresolved conflicts. Parallel parenting became the vessel through which we safeguarded our child’s emotional well-being.
